ANCIENT EGYPT, EGYPTOLOGY,
AND THE SPHINX

Ancient - Old; aged; of many years; of long standing; existing from a far past date or period. Belonging to times long past; of a remote period or of a date early in history.

Egyptology - The science or study of Egyptian antiquities.

Sphinx - An image in the form of a recumbent lion having a man's head (andro-sphinx), a ram's head (criosphinx), or a hawk's head (heiracosphinx). The man-headed sphinx is a representation of Harmachis, the morning sun, the notion that it typifies enigmatical wisdom being derived from the Greeks. The huge sphinx ( often "The Sphinx" ) near the pyramids of Gizeh has a man's head and the recumbent body of a lion. It is 172 ft. long and 66 ft. high; is partly hewn from the solid granite, and partly built up; has a small temple built against the breast between the fore paws.
