ATLANTIS, LEMURIA AND THE MAYA

Atlantis - A mythical island in the west, beyond the Pillars of Hercules, mentioned by Plato, Pliny, and other ancient writers, and said to have been sunk beneath the ocean by an earthquake. It was possibly an obscure tradition of the existence of a western continent. New Atlantis, an allegory by Lord Bacon, and the name of an island described in it as being situated, like the Atlantis of the ancients, in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Bacon represents himself as wrecked on this island, and as finding there an association for the cultivation of natural science and improvements in the arts.

Maya - An Indian of the most important people of the Mayan stock. They inhabit Yucatan, where at the time of it's discovery they had a powerful and well organized government. The last of the independent Mayas was overcome by Mexico only in 1901. The language of the Mayas.

PROBLEM OF LEMURIA, THE
by LEWIS SPENCE (1933)

The Sunken Continent of the Pacific. Frontispiece (Map of the Pacific, 1589, showing Hypothetical Continent South of New Guinea). The legend of a sunken continent in the Pacific basin has long exercised a charm of attraction compelling in its fascination. Mr.Spence found the myth of Lemuria in its Polynesian form, and the myth of Atlantis as told by Plato, have a common basis. Two descriptions of the tale exist, one of flood and submergence and the other of volcanic disturbance or earthquake. Contents: The Legend of Lemuria; The Argument From Archeology; The Testimony of Tradition; The Evidence From Myth & Magic; The Races of Lemuria; The Testimony of Custom; The Proof From Art; The Geology of Lemuria; The Evidence From Biology; The Catastrophe and Its Results; Life and Civilization in Lemuria; Atlantis & Lemuria; Conclusions. The author says the most effective way to destroy a hypothesis is to advance it dogmatically and in that manner of pompous assurance and intolerance for the views of others which compares so evilly with the attitude of honest conviction. In the pages of this book I will not attempt to hector the reader into acceptance.
